11 Pizzas That You Can Make on a Toastie (Grilled Cheese Sandwich Ideas)

If you’re craving a “quick and easy” pizza, but you don’t feel like ordering one or making one from scratch, try making pizzas out of toasties. A very affordable alternative that tastes almost as good as real pizza!

The basic recipe for a pizza toastie is simple: you basically put all pizza ingredients on white bread and grill it in a toastie maker or sandwich grill.

Pizza Margherita Toastie

The basic version of a Pizza Toastie is the Pizza Margherita. It has the sauce, the cheese and the flavor of a pizza. From here, you can add more ingredients as you wish! 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread
  • 4 tbsp of pizza sauce
  • 50 grams of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Pinch of oregano
  • Fresh basil

Instructions:

  1. Spread half of the sauce on one slice of bread. The other half of the sauce goes on the other slice!
  2. Sprinkle the cheese (evenly) over one slice of bread.
  3. Add a pinch of oregano on top of the cheese and some fresh basil leaves.
  4. Place the second slice of bread on top.
  5. Grill for 3-5 minutes or until crispy.
  6. Enjoy!

The Pizza Margherita Toastie recipe is the simplest version of a pizza toastie… Now it’s time to go for some funkier Pizza Toasties!

Pizza Hawaii Toastie

The toastie hawaii and pizza hawaii have very similar ingredients: cheese, ham and pineapple. This tropical twist gives every pizza/toastie a boost and makes it so much more flavorful!

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread
  • 4 tbsp of pizza sauce
  • 50 grams of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 slice of ham (cut into smaller strips)
  • 1 pineapple ring (cut into smaller pieces)

Instructions:

  1. Spread half of the sauce on one slice of bread. The other half of the sauce goes on the other slice!
  2. Sprinkle the cheese (evenly) over one slice of bread.
  3. Add the ham and the pineapple on top of the cheese.
  4. Place the second slice of bread on top.
  5. Grill for 3-5 minutes or until crispy.
  6. Yummy!

Tip: when the pineapple is very wet or juicy, it can tear the bread. Try to get rid of some of the extra juice with a paper towel before you place it on the toastie.

2. Pizza Funghi & Prosciutto Toastie

Mushroom and prosciutto is a classic combination for a pizza. This italian, dry-cured ham is salty and therefore combines perfectly with the mushrooms.

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread
  • 4 tbsp of pizza sauce
  • 50 grams of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 slice of prosciutto (cut into smaller strips)
  • 3-4 large mushrooms (cut into smaller pieces)

Instructions:

  1. Spread half of the sauce on one slice of bread. The other half of the sauce goes on the other slice!
  2. Sprinkle the cheese (evenly) over one slice of bread.
  3. Add the prosciutto and the mushrooms on top of the cheese
  4. Place the second slice of bread on top.
  5. Grill for 3-5 minutes or until crispy.
  6. Buon appetito!

Tip: Opt for chestnut mushrooms: they are more flavorful than regular mushrooms! Try to cut them in as small slices as possible to make sure the toastie iron “closes”.

3. Chicken & Spinach Pizza Toastie

While a chicken and spinach pizza is often presented as a white pizza, you can also use these ingredients on a traditional “red sauce” pizza! That’s what we’re going for with this variation!

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread
  • 4 tbsp of pizza sauce
  • 50 grams of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ of cooked chicken fillet (cut thinly) or deli meat chicken slices
  • Handful of fresh spinach
  • 1 tbsp of cream cheese

Instructions:

  1. Spread half of the sauce on one slice of bread. The other half of the sauce goes on the other slice!
  2. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese (evenly) over one slice of bread.
  3. Add the chicken on top of the cheese
  4. Place the tablespoon of cream cheese in the center of the toastie (on top of the chicken).
  5. Place the raw spinach on top of that (as flat as possible).
  6. Place the second slice of bread on top.
  7. Grill for 5 minutes or until crispy.
  8. Hmmmm!

Tip: Make sure the chicken is cut thinly, so that the toastie is equally distributed. It might be easier to use deli meat chicken on this toastie!

Veggie Tip: if you’re planning on using a lot of spinach, you might want to saute it before putting it on your toastie. Otherwise, the spinach might release too much water and make the bread possibly soggy.

4. Tuna Pizza Toastie

The tuna pizza used to be my favorite kind of pizza for a very long time. So, of course, there’s a tuna pizza toastie!

  • 4 tbsp of pizza sauce
  • 50 grams of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ can of tuna
  • 10 grams of red onion (thinly cut rings)
  • 1 tbsp of capers

Instructions:

  1. Spread half of the sauce on one slice of bread. The other half of the sauce goes on the other slice!
  2. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese (evenly) over one slice of bread.
  3. Add the tuna on top of the cheese
  4. Place the onions on top of the tuna.
  5. Place the capers between the tuna and onions
  6. Place the second slice of bread on top.
  7. Grill for 3-5 minutes or until crispy.
  8. Delicious!!

5. Pizza Caprese Toastie

Classic pizza ingredients that match a toastie perfectly!

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread

  • 50 grams of sliced mozzarella cheese (not shredded)
  • ½ a tomato (cut in very thin slices)
  • 1 tbsp of green pesto (alla Genovese)

Instructions:

  1. Spread half of the sauce on one slice of bread. The other half of the sauce goes on the other slice!
  2. Place the mozzarella cheese on one slice of bread.
  3. Add the tomato on top of the cheese.
  4. Drizzle the pesto on top of the other ingredients.
  5. Grill for 3-5 minutes or before the cheese starts running!

Tip: Opt for beef tomato or beefsteak tomatoes: they’re less juicy and therefore perfect on a toasted sandwich.

6. Spicy Pepperoni Pizza Toastie

You can’t have a pizza toastie list without having a spicy pepperoni pizza toastie on it!

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of white bread

  4. Sprinkle some chili flakes or slices of fresh red pepper on top of the pepperoni
  5. Grill for 3-5 minutes or until the bread is crispy!

Sauce Tip: Serve with sriracha or tabasco for even more kick! Or ketchup to cool down! 🙂

7. Barbeque Mixed Grill Pizza Toastie

Possibly not a pizza you’ll see at an italian restaurant, but definitely one that is fusion-style pizza worthy!

  2. Spread half of the sauce on one slice of bread.
  3. Spread the barbeque sauce on the other slice of bread.
  4. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese (evenly) over one slice of bread.
  5. Place the bacon, ham, pepperoni and chicken on top of the cheese.
  6. Place the second slice on top of the toastie (with the sauce on the inside)
  7. Grill for 5-7 minutes or until the bread is crispy!
  8. Good luck! 🙂

  6. Place the second slice of bread on top.
  7. Grill for 5 minutes or until right before the cheese starts to get too runny.
  8. Enjoy!
