Recipe Inspiration

Bacon, Egg and Cheese is such a classic sandwich that we had to make a toastie out of it. On top of that, the question of whether it would be possible to cook a raw egg in a toastie kept us awake at night. And well, who doesn’t need a recipe to conquer every morning!

Why We Love It

We have a thing for Sunday Brunches… lazy, neverending sleep-ins, and extra cuddle-time! We really love Sunday mornings! When cuddle time is over, we normally make ourselves a traditional Sunday Brunch, with a boiled egg, cheese, freshly baked bread, jams, croissants, orange juice… the real deal. This recipe brings us the Sunday Morning Brunches when we don’t have time for a real sleep in, but still want to enjoy an energizing breakfast!

Equipment

Normally, you fry your eggs and bacon in a pan, but we don’t! We threw everything on our sandwich grill! For this toastie, here is the specific equipment that we used:

  • Tefal: Inicio Grill (Awesome for Toasties and All Grilling Needs)

  • Tefal: Ultracompact Sandwich (Dedicated Toastie Maker)

For this toastie, we recommend using a sandwich grill or press because it won’t press the egg out. Any kind of grill that has a loose top will work best for this toastie. However, we did try making this recipe in a toastie maker as well, and even though it didn’t go according to plan, we did enjoy a DELICIOUS toastie!

We have spent many hours making, and eating, toasties in our Toastie Lab kitchen. We have some awesome equipment recommendations that you can use to make your very own toasties. Check it out on our Recommended Tools page.

    Down The Bread Hole

It might look complicated, but we have discovered the easiest way to make this breakfast toastie-sandwich. You will need an extra, third slice of bread which will have a hole cut in it to serve as a bread-frame and egg place-holder. You could try without it, but we suspect that the results will be messy.

    Them Eggs

Yes, we’re using uncooked eggs for this breakfast toastie. Not for long though, because the grill will be perfectly capable of frying them!

We have even managed to get the runny yolk with the rest of the egg being perfectly cooked. It’s an art, really. Practice makes perfect, so we recommend making this toastie many, many times to master this skill.

    Cheesy

No toastie without cheese, right?! We like to use a regular gouda on this one, but be like us and experiment with different flavors, and please do let us know if you come up with anything especially delicious!

    Bacon

And if a toastie without cheese is unthinkable, than I think you’ll be on the same page when it comes to bacon and eggs, because… No eggs without bacon! We like to grill the bacon on our toastie-machine before adding them to the uncooked toastie.

This is mainly because we don’t want to use any extra pans, but also because it leaves that nice greasy bacon juice for the bread. AND, the grill makes perfect, crisp bacon without burning it!

    B-b-b-BUTTER

For this toastie you have to go all in. Juicy, crispy bacon, melty, salty cheese, and creamy, rich butter. Oh yeah…

Besides just being delicious, there are a couple of reasons why you want to make sure you have enough butter at hand… The first one being, that the toastie has a bit of a fancy construction to make sure the egg doesn’t just fall right out. So, in order to make sure the “middle” layer of bread doesn’t slip, we added some extra butter on the edges as a form of yummy-butter-glue.

Also, the toastie has some extra grilling time because of the raw egg. You want to make sure that the egg is cooked enough before you take the toastie off the grill. Therefore, it is necessary to add some butter to the tops to prevent them from burning.

We haven’t tried using any alternative oils or butters, but if you do and it works out well, let us know!!!
